Possums Are Part of Melbourne.
But Not in Your Roof.
If you’ve been woken up by scratching, thumping, or shuffling sounds coming from your ceiling, you’re almost certainly dealing with a possum. Melbourne is home to two species — the Common Brushtail and the Common Ringtail — and both have adapted remarkably well to urban living. Your roof is warm, sheltered, and predator-free. For a possum, it’s the perfect home.
The trouble is, once a possum moves in, the damage begins almost immediately. Urine soaks through insulation, droppings accumulate, roof timbers get gnawed, and wiring can be compromised. Left unchecked, a single possum in your roof can cause thousands of dollars in structural damage — and the noise alone will drive any household mad.
Martin The Possum Guy has spent over a decade removing possums from homes and businesses across Melbourne. We use one-way exit doors and ethical proofing techniques that let possums leave but not return — in full compliance with Victorian wildlife law. No traps, no harm, no stress.

The Two Possums You’ll Find in Melbourne
Both species are native to Australia and protected under Victorian law. Knowing which one you have helps us remove them faster and more effectively.
The Common Brushtail Possum
The Brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) is the possum most Melbourne residents encounter. Stocky, silver-grey, and about the size of a domestic cat, the Brushtail is a determined creature — once it decides your roof is home, it won’t leave without encouragement.
Brushtails are highly territorial and solitary. They’re most active between dusk and dawn, which is why roof noise tends to erupt just as you’re trying to sleep. They feed on leaves, fruits, and flowers, but inside your roof they’ll chew timber, insulation, and cabling without hesitation.
- Weight: 1.5 – 4.5 kg
- Mostly solitary
- Bushy, black-tipped tail
- Loud thumping at night
- Common in inner suburbs
- Strong territorial instinct
The Common Ringtail Possum
The Ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) is smaller, quieter, and often mistaken for a rat. Unlike the Brushtail, Ringtails are social animals — they tend to live in family groups, which means if you have one, you likely have several. They build their nests (called dreys) from bark, leaves, and grass, often inside wall cavities or dense roof insulation.
While Ringtails cause less individual noise than Brushtails, a family of them in your roof or walls can cause significant odour, damage, and health concerns over time. They require a specific licence to trap and relocate under Victorian law, making professional removal essential.
- Weight: 0.6 – 1.1 kg
- Family groups (2–4)
- White-tipped curling tail
- Softer, scratching sounds
- Common in garden suburbs
- Nest builders (dreys)
Possums Are Protected Animals in Australia — Here’s What That Means for You
Many Melbourne homeowners don’t realise that attempting to remove a possum yourself is not only ineffective — it can land you in serious legal trouble. Under the Wildlife Act 1975 (Vic) and the national Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, all native possums are protected species. This means killing, injuring, capturing, or relocating a possum without a proper permit is a criminal offence.
The law also specifies that any possum that is trapped must be released within 50 metres of where it was captured — on the same property. You cannot relocate a possum to a park, reserve, or neighbouring street. Only licensed wildlife control operators are authorised to handle, remove, and re-home possums under specific exemptions.
You Cannot Kill or Harm a Possum
Killing, poisoning, or deliberately injuring a possum is a serious criminal offence under the Wildlife Act 1975. Penalties include heavy fines and potential prosecution.
Relocation Must Be Within 50 Metres
If you legally trap a possum, Victorian law requires it to be released within 50 metres of the capture site — on your own property. Releasing it elsewhere is illegal.
Ringtail Possums Require a Permit
Ringtail possums cannot be trapped or handled without a specific authority to control wildlife (ATC permit) issued by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA).
Proofing Is the Correct Long-Term Solution
The legal and effective approach is to install one-way exit devices that let possums leave, then seal all entry points so they cannot return — the method Martin The Possum Guy uses on every job.

Don’t Risk the Fine — or Your Property
Attempting DIY possum removal in Victoria is a gamble most homeowners regret. Possums are smart, strong, and determined — and without professional-grade proofing, they’ll find their way back in through a new entry point within days.
More importantly, the wrong approach can put you on the wrong side of the law. Martin The Possum Guy is fully licensed under the Wildlife Act 1975. Every job we do is legal, ethical, and covered by a written satisfaction guarantee.
